Autumn on the Avalon - 5 MUST DO Things This Fall

5 Must Do Things in St. John's This Fall

Autumn has eased its way onto the island this month, with this season here comes bustling gales of wind to blow the colourful leaves all over the place. The landscape has an unkempt wildness to it and though it may be an unpredictable season, it brings with it the harvest and the fresh new beginnings of a school year. I enjoy the Fall of the year here so much.

I love foraging in the Fall, the cool crisp air, the pungent aroma of the barrens and berries is comforting. If you love berry picking, this is your season.

1 Berry picking, every Newfoundlander and Labradorian who partakes in the picking have their favourite spots, the further you "walk in" the more abundant the berries. It's always a good idea if you are of good health to leave the berries close to the communities for people who may not be able to walk very far. I know my Mom loved it so much and I think of her when I see a good berry patch close to the road. It's a trot to get a couple of gallons of berries, but there is nothing like it. It brings so many fond memories for me picking with my family. This activity costs zero and if you are in the mood to make some extra cash you can always sell some of your berries.

2 Lester's Farm is gorgeous in the Fall, they line the road to the farm with pumpkins and it looks oh so welcoming. Pumpkinfest starts on October 23rd and there is also a "Farm Haunt," for adults only, it's been on the go since October 12th. They have an onsite bakery, an ice cream counter, petting barn and greenhouses. Its a great way to spend a few hours.

3 MUN Botanical Garden is a must for those botanically inclined, it is located on pretty Mt. Sci Road in the city. In the Fall its hours are from Wednesday to Sunday 10am-4pm. They are most known for their Merry and Bright Holiday Light Festival Nov 29 - Dec 22nd. It is so splendid to behold, it really gets you in the Christmas spirit. The regular cost for attending the garden is $7.00 in the low season Oct 1- Nov 10. A family day pass is 17.00 for 2 adults and their children! How amazing is that plus everyone gets to learn so much about botany. Your family all get to spend time together, get in some exercise walking and enjoy nature with your favourite people!

4 The Rooms located at 9 Bonaventure Avenue in the heart of the city is an unforgettable experience. Explore the history and culture of this place at The Rooms. If you want to experience dining at its best in the city check out The Rooms Cafe on the fourth floor. The food is amazing and the view is brilliant. It is the perfect place to take family and friends and they do a fabulous Afternoon Tea. You can visit the Rooms free on Wednesdays btw which is a nice treat!

5 St. John's Farmer's Market - This one holds a special place in my heart, I started my business going to these markets on Saturdays :-) , The St. John's Farmer's Market is located at 245 Freshwater Road. The international food is fantastic, the produce and crafts are top notch. If you want to support local this is an obvious choice. Open 9am to 4pm year round.

There are countless events, festivals and places to check out. We are quite the social place, but these are my top 5 personal picks that I thoroughly enjoy this time of year. Stay tuned for more insights into our beautiful province as we highlight places, events and people monthly. What is your favourite Autumn activity?

xx,

Lisa
